A summary of the medicine:
Seroquel generic is used as a remedy for the treatment of mood/mental disorder (such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, sudden occurrences of depression, mania linked with bipolar disorder). Quetiapine belongs to a class of anti-psychotic drug which works on the neurotransmitter – a natural component present in the brain by restoring its balance.
This drug can reduce hallucinations and increase your concentration. It assists you to feel active, energetic, less nervous and think more positively. It also improves your energy level, sleeping pattern, mood swings, appetite, etc.
Quetiapine works on the various receptors present in the brain. It helps to calm down and lower psychotic beliefs. The precise way of working of the medication is not yet known, however, some researchers, have stated that the drug affects antagonism of serotonin and dopamine receptors. It may also distress adrenergic alpha 1 receptors ( liable for the drop in blood pressure) and histamine receptors (liable for side effects of drowsiness) respectively.
For children from 10-17 years are suggested to take 25 mg a day which can be further increased to 50 mg, 100 mg or 150 mg based on the requirement. The dosage strength should not go beyond 600 mg a day as it can lead to adverse effects.
For adult and elderly the initial dose is 50 mg a day which can be increased to 50 mg, 100 mg or 150 mg as an when required based on the symptoms. However, in this case, the maximum dosage should not go beyond 800 mg.
People with a weak immune system or postural hypotension should target a lower amount of dosage.
Patients suffering from depressive incidences due to bipolar disorder should take 50 mg during bedtime. They can slowly increase the dosage to 100 mg, 200 mg and max 300 mg per day.
Seroquel Side effects:
Communal side effects of the medicine include constipation, dizziness, headache, asthenia, drowsiness, increased cholesterol, increased serum triglycerides, xerostomia, increased thyroid hormone level, abdominal pain, increased in alanine aminotransferase, weight gain, pharyngitis, dyspepsia, orthostatic hypotension, etc.
Some more comprehensive list of side effects include chills, cold sweats, lightheadedness, black or tarry stools, chest pain, cough, blurred vision, uncommon bleeding/bruising, swollen glands, difficult or painful urination, restlessness, loss of appetite, menstrual changes, dry skin, irregular heartbeat, indigestion, runny nose, etc.
Important point: Elderly people suffering from dementia psychosis who consume an antipsychotic drug are at higher risk of death as Seroquel fumarate is not approved for the remedy of patients suffering from dementia (psychosis) below 10 years of age.
