It is used for short term periods of a week or two. It is to be taken on an empty stomach by mouth and not with food as the medicine won’t be much effective and won’t work quickly.
It is to be consumed once at night or as suggested by your healthcare expert. Zolpidem works quickly and should be taken right before you go to bed.
The medicine will let you sleep for about 7 to 8 hours duration. If you plan on waking up early just to sleep for less than 7 hours then please don’t take this medicine. Otherwise, you can have memory loss and your body will not be alert enough to let you drive or operate any machinery.
The maximum dosage is 10mg a day. The dosage depends upon the age, gender, medical condition and response to the treatment. In women, this medicine is removed from your body at a very slow rate than men and thus they are provided with a lesser dose. The older adults and children are also given a lesser dose so that the possibility of side effects in them is reduced.
This medicine should not be used for longer time periods and it should never be taken more than prescribed. If the results are undesirable consult with the doctor before making any changes in the dosage.
If you have been taking this medicine for a long time or at high dosage or if you suddenly stop using it you can see withdrawal symptoms. The symptoms which will happen are vomiting, nausea, stomach upset, flushing, stomach cramps, nervousness or shakiness.
To prevent this reaction your physician will reduce the dosage slowly and report to the doctor immediately when any of these conditions are seen.
There can rarely be chances of drug addiction which can also be because of a history of alcohol or other drug addictions.
The body also gets used to it if consumed for a long run and will stop acting on the body. If it stops working or if the symptoms are seen for more than 7 days then show it to your doctor else the condition might get worse.
After you stop taking this medicine you might face trouble in sleeping and might have a few sleepless nights which is absolutely normal and is called Rebound Insomnia. It will be there for not more than 1 or 2 nights but it persists longer then consult with your doctor.
Feeling sleepy during the day
Allergic symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, rashes/itching, swelling of tongue, on the face or throat.
The risk of side effects isn’t greater. People do things while not fully awake and do not remember them. They do things like sleepwalking, eat something, make calls or even have sex all of this being half awake. This can turn out to be dangerous for yourself or for others.
If you take alcohol along with this medicine then the drowsiness will increase. You can even drive in this situation without being fully awake. The risk of side effects is increased in this case.
If you have allergies with zolpidem or any other sedatives tell your doctor to avoid any allergic reactions.
Give a detailed medical history to the doctor, whether you have any kidney or liver problems, any mental problems, any past history of drug addiction or alcohol addiction or family history of drug abuse, any respiratory disorder like breathing problems or any muscle problem.
The effect of this medicine can be seen even after you get up. Alcohol and other medications can affect the level of drowsiness so try to avoid these things.
Wait for at least 8 hours for the effect to wear off. Sometimes a person isn’t alert enough to carry out the daily activity or even drive. It is strictly recommended not to drive or operate anything if you do not feel safe or alert.
Older adults are much more sensitive to this drug and can face severe drowsiness or confusion and also have a risk of falling. The dosage is kept lower for them.
It should not be administered by pregnant ladies or breastfeeding ladies as it leads to affect the newborn with undesirable effects. It can be consumed only if needed and only after consulting with the doctor.
There are medications which can react with Zolpidem and boost the danger of side effects and also the reaction of the medicine is altered.
Medications include antifungals, rifampin, etc. Also, consumption of alcohol, or any sleeping pills or pain relievers can affect the working of this medicine. Always check with the possible drug interactions with your doctor to avoid any serious side effects.
If you have taken more than prescribed or more than the maximum dosage you can get yourself into trouble. You can face problems like slow breathing or a very deep sleep from which one cannot wake you up. It can also cause death or put you in a coma. The moment you suspect overdose contact the medical team or nearest hospital immediately.
If you skip a dose then only take if you can get sleep for duration of 7 to 8 hours, otherwise take the next dose directly.
This medicine is not to be shared with others. The sleeping pattern and duration are different in every person. Consultation with your doctor is advised if you want to change your sleeping pattern. When you start getting older the sleep pattern naturally changes and your sleep gets interrupted a lot. So consult with a doctor if you want to improve your sleep without medications.
