The medicine comes under capsule form which is to be taken with water without chewing and with or without food. It is to be taken right before going to bed at night and only once in a day.
The dosage depends upon various factors like medical condition, age, and gender of the person, treatment level and the response during the treatment. The dosage available is 15mg and 30mg. The maximum dose given can be up to 60mg but only in very few cases.
Dalmane in every individual is started at a low dose of 15mg and mostly this dosage is enough for majority individuals. People having severe Insomnia are given up to 30mg. The dosage can be adjusted according to how the body responds. The dosage shall not be changed without consulting the doctor or even should not be stopped suddenly.
In elderly patients, patients with renal and hepatic impairment or with any respiratory disorders have to be given lower doses only and should not exceed 15mg.
Dalmane can be taken for a maximum of 4 weeks and should be on an intermittent basis. Long term use is not recommended.
When prescribed for this medicine keep regular appointments with your doctor so that dosage can be adjusted and possible side effects are avoided.
Withdrawal symptoms like vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps can be seen if used for a long time or in high doses or if suddenly stopped. The treatment for this is lowering the dose and visiting the doctor if any of these symptoms are seen.
It is also used for treating dental problems and produces the same effects.
There are instances when people can have memory loss mostly when they wake up early. Alcohol consumption is strictly not recommended as you can suffer from severe drowsiness or dizziness and the risk of falling might increase.
Whenever you face any of the side effects consult with the doctor to avoid worsening of the situation.
It is not recommended in children. Also not advised in pregnant or breastfeeding women as the drug can pass into the infant and cause undesirable effects.
Patients who are allergic to Flurazepam or other benzodiazepines are not advised for this medicine.
Flurazepam cannot be used to treat any psychotic illness. If using in patients with a history of alcohol/drug abuse use this drug with extreme caution.
Pregnant/breastfeeding women can take this medicine only if necessary and under the consultation of a doctor. If she suspects to be pregnant then she should report to the doctor for the discontinuance of the medicine.
It should not be given to patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency and severe hepatic insufficiency. Patients having the renal or hepatic disease should be given very low doses.
Use of Dalmane and opioids together can result in respiratory depression, sedation, coma or death. It is used only in cases where there is no other option available and at the very lowest dose and the duration of the treatment should be very short.
Respiratory depression and sedation are the main symptoms which have to be taken care of and immediately given medical assistance.
Rebound Insomnia is a condition which is seen after you stop using the medicine. For 1-2 nights you will have difficulty in sleeping and disturbed sleeping patterns.
When you wake up and do not feel fully alert, do not drive any vehicle or operate any machinery.
Benzodiazepines along with CNS drugs such as Barbiturates, sedatives/hypnotics, anxiolytics, narcotic analgesics, antihypertensives, anticonvulsants, and anesthetics will cause CNS depressant effect.
Even its association with Opioids increase the risk of sedation, coma, and death because the levels of CNS depressant is highly increased.
It can be used with muscle relaxants to increase the relaxant effect of Flurazepam.
Flurazepam is used in combination with alcohol can produce an increased sedative effect. This, in turn, will affect your alertness or responsiveness and you will have issues driving or operating any machinery.
If you miss a dose take only if you can have 7 to 8 hours of sleep so that you don’t have the effect even after waking up. Do not take more than prescribed and in case you have overdosed yourself contact your doctor or the medical assistance immediately.
The symptoms likely to be seen are confusion, severe dizziness, impaired vision, unconsciousness, respiratory depression and in rare instances coma or death.
There can be a risk of seizure with Flumanezil treatment in patients on long term benzodiazepines or in overdose cases.
By using this medicine you will have some undesirable effects like confusion, headache, feeling sleepy even after 8 hours. These are all common effects which can be seen in any individual. Do not make Dalmane a part of your routine life. It is just a temporary relief for your disturbed and sleepless nights.
Sometimes due to medical reasons and sometimes as we grow our sleeping cycles change naturally. If you want you can consult your doctor for a solution where you mostly do not need the use of medicine quite often. You can start by avoiding caffeine and alcohol during bedtime or going to sleep every day at the same particular time or even avoiding your afternoon naps.
