How to Use:
If prescribed by a doctor then follow the instructions and dosage as given by him. Otherwise, take this medication with water orally and after an interval of every 4 to 6 hours. It can be taken with or without food. Take this drug with food if you are already suffering from nausea or vomiting. In such cases, you should lie down for a few hours without any head movements or very minimal. Also, you can ask for other ways to decrease nausea from your doctor.
The maximum dosage which is recommended is 400mg per day so 100mg of the medicine 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor. It can be taken 3 times a day if the relief lasts for a longer period. But in older adults like 70 years or above the maximum dose is 300mg per day.
It is always suggested to recommend a doctor first. In every individual be it an adult or a child the dosage is started at low doses and then increased depending upon how your body responds.
This medication should be taken once you start seeing the signs of the pain. If you wait until the pain increases or worsens and then start this medication then it might not only work on your body.
When you have pain during conditions like arthritis where the pain is almost constant then you need opioid medications which act for a longer period of time. Tramadol alone can't work in such cases it can be used only when you have sudden pain in the body or the joints and only when absolutely needed.
Serious side effects are very rare out of which one condition is the serotonin syndrome where the levels of the serotonin are increased in your body.
You should immediately contact the doctor if you get any of the above side effects or if they worsen.
If you feel dizzy or drowsy always lie down for an hour and try not to move your head. Whenever in rest slowly get up from your position.
If you tend to get diarrhea or constipation, start drinking lots of water and keep your diet light. Keep exercising and take medications like laxatives or stool softeners.
Drug addiction can result from long and continuous use of this medicine. You may get addicted to this drug and may require consumption even on the slightest pain. And the risk is higher in those who already have an addiction towards smoking or alcohol. In such cases take medicine when prescribed and do not stop taking without consulting the doctor.
It is not to be consumed by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Consume only if necessary and after consulting the doctor.
Do not change the dose or take more than prescribed. Follow the instructions given otherwise the risk of side effects and addiction is increased.
Make sure to check all the ingredients and whether you are allergic to it or not.
List all the medications which you are using prescribed or non-prescribed, ayurvedic or herbal to your doctor so that all the possible drug interactions can be avoided.
Provide a detailed medical history so that if you have any disease, like brain disorders or mental disorders or stomach problems, necessary precautions can be taken.
As this medicine can make you feel drowsy do not drive or walk or do any other activity until you stop feeling so.
Avoid consumption of alcohol or smoking.
Children and older adults are more sensitive to this and will face serious side effects.
An overdose happens when you take the medicine more than recommended or more than the maximum dose. Taking extra medicine won't increase the capacity or effect. There have been cases of death reported with Tramadol.
Symptoms which are possibly seen during an overdose are serious seizures, depression, passing out, difficulty in breathing/ slow breathing, coma, decreased blood pressure, irregular or slow heartbeat. It can also be possible that a person is awake and has no symptoms but even they have to contact the medical unit immediately.
Naloxone is available should be given in such situations. It will partially reverse the effect of Tramadol and will reduce the risk of the above symptoms.
Do not share this medicine with anyone as it can cause serious effects on the person's body. The medicine given to you is after a complete detailed examination and according to your age and body's response. The dosage given to you can turn to be harmful or fatal for the next person. Consultation for such medication is a must.
Note: Misuse of this drug is a punishable offense. It can lead to overdose or even death. Also if given to a pregnant woman without consulting the doctor can cause fetal death or abnormalities in the child. In a breastfeeding mother, it can pass into the infant through the breast milk and can cause health problems.
This medicine can stop acting on your body after a long term use as your body will get used to the drug. Consult with your physician if the medicine stops working on you.
